Lakeview Middle School confiscates some phones, parent worried

WARSAW, IND. (WNDU) – We’re digging deeper into an issue at a college in Warsaw where the phones of several students were confiscated after police said a student sent a nude photo of themselves.
A worried parent says he wished it had been handled differently, and he still doesn’t know when or if his daughter will get her phone back.
The phones of several students at Lakeview Middle School have been confiscated due to an ongoing investigation into a nude photo one student sent to herself.
A worried parent who wants to remain anonymous says his daughter’s phone has been taken by police and he is frustrated.
“My main concern is really privacy, the invasion of what the police and the school might be looking for by getting children’s cell phones.”
Warsaw police say there is a tandem investigation with the school, and they are securing some phones so that no further damage can be done with the photo.
Public Information Officer Bradley Kellar says they must either get consent or write and apply for a search warrant to go through a student’s phone. He says if there is probable reason to believe there is criminal evidence on a phone, they can take it but cannot immediately search it. He also says they will be working on this investigation quickly to return the phones to their owners as soon as possible.
“I’m not letting you have access to my daughter’s phone, not because I think she’s guilty, but because I think you’re following the wrong procedures to get to where you are.”
Ultimately, this worried parent says he hopes to get some clarification soon and that this situation will be resolved soon.
“I really just want answers on how this is supposed to be handled. We talked to other parents about what happened and like I said it took them years and they might not get the phone back at all.
Community Schools in Warsaw said they could not comment on the situation at this time as a police investigation was underway.
