McDonald’s takes on the “Space Jam 2” merch manna
Space Jam: a new legacy is the cash cow that almost all brands get into. Nike, of course, has whipped up a line of sneakers and apparel – and more than 200 other brand collaborators are launching products for the sequel featuring LeBron James.
McDonald’s and Diamond Supply have now joined in the merchandising event of the year, if not in our lives, which have teamed up to create a capsule full of Tune Squad clothing. The fast food giant actually released Happy Meal toys for the original. Space jam in 1996, and James endorsed the brand until 2015. Still, it’s funny that McDonald’s is mentioned anywhere near this generation’s GOAT, which spends $ 1.5 million per year on his body and said last time he ate anything from the Golden Arches when he was 24.
With the LeBron association only implied, the capsule instead focuses on the Looney Tunes characters who play for the fictional team. The team appears together on t-shirts and hoodies, while Bugs is assigned the sole billing on a basketball jersey with the McDonald’s and Diamond Supply brands appearing on both shoulders. To complete the bundle, a pair of matching basketball shorts feature an oversized McDonald’s logo around the leg.
Each piece of merch is quite portable, but with so many products released for the Space jam Consequently, it is difficult to defend the offer of one brand over another. The original film gave birth to the namesake Jordan 11s which is one of the most iconic sneakers of all time, but now that the branded exercise has been oversized, nothing seems particularly meaningful.
At the very least, by flooding the market, Warner Bros. makes sure that anyone who wants Space Jam merchandise can get it in one form or another – accessibility that’s just a by-product of this shameless cash grab. If these Diamond Supply and McDonald’s products are truly the Space Jam product for you, then you can gobble them up at the site of the first at 12 p.m. EST on July 3.
