Parents in need will choose gifts at the Downtown Muskegon Neighborhoods Christmas store

MUSKEGON, MI – Since 2007, a community effort has helped Muskegon families in need put gifts under the Christmas tree.
The Downtown Muskegon Neighborhoods Christmas Shop opened for its 15th year on Tuesday, December 14, so parents can purchase toys and gifts at discounted prices.
âThey have the flexibility to choose whatever they think their child needs,â said Charlotte Johnson, Christmas store coordinator.
Organized by members of Muskegon neighborhoods, the store is filled with donations from individuals, churches, businesses and organizations.
Parents, who might struggle to make ends meet, are referred to the store by school districts or neighborhood associations. They can then purchase items for 20% of the original cost.
âThe whole idea of ââthe Christmas store is to make parents feel worthy,â Johnson said. “We want them to have a contribution so that they can feel that this is something that I took my hard earned money, and I was able to do it for my child.”
The Christmas store offers a variety of gifts for children of all ages.
It includes rattles, blocks and soft toys for babies. Items like toy cars, sports equipment, dolls and jewelry are available for younger children. Gifts for teens include headphones, bluetooth speakers, nail polish, and makeup.
Clothing, books and board games are also available.
Johnson said more than 100 families will be invited to the store. Last year he served 108 families with 344 children.
âIt’s everyone who works together to make sure families are supported and children are blessed for Christmas this year,â Johnson said.
the Christmas store in downtown Muskegon neighborhoods will be open every other day from Tuesday December 14 to Saturday December 18 by invitation only.
