Why is Hailey Bieber’s ‘Rhode’ skincare line being sued? Clothing brand slams model with trademark infringement lawsuit
Hailey Bieber has run into legal issues for her new skincare brand, Rhode.
A clothing brand of the same name has filed a lawsuit against Bieber, claiming it attempted to acquire their company name and knew of their existence before launching its skincare line on June 15, 2022.
They’re demanding that Bieber change his company’s name, which confuses shoppers and could hurt the clothing line’s hard work to establish its brand.
RHODE Co-Founders Reveal Hailey Bieber Tried To Take Over Their Brand Four Years Ago
In an official statement posted to their Instagram account on June 21, RHODE co-founders Phoebe Vickers and Purna Khatau said they were “forced” to take legal action to protect their brand and business. .
The message claimed that Bieber tried to buy the company four years ago. However, the request was refused by the owners:
“Hailey could choose any brand for her skincare line. We only have the ‘RHODE’ brand name that we built. That’s why we didn’t sell our brand to her when she asked him four years ago, and why we asked him now to rebrand his skincare line.”
The statement also mentioned that Bieber’s company was “harming” its brand and everyone associated with it, including employees, customers and partners.
Many A-list celebrities like Beyonce, Mindy Kaling and Kelly Clarkson have already been spotted in RHODE outfits, further enhancing the clothing line‘s credibility.
Why Rhodes? Because it’s Hailey Bieber’s middle name
Lisa T. Simpson, the senior litigation attorney for RHODE Clothing Sound, told Page Six Style:
“She did this despite knowing Rhode and her prior rights. It is an unfortunate circumstance. We of course understand that Hailey wants to use her middle name for her trademark, but the law on this is clear: you can’t create that kind of trademark confusion just because you want to use your name.”
She also added:
“What Ms. Bieber is doing is hurting a minority-owned joint venture that two women painstakingly built into a growing global brand.”
No comment was made by Hailey or her legal team.
What other name did Hailey choose for her skincare line?
Prior to this, Hailey Bieber had attempted to file many different names for her brand.
She initially chose to use the name “Bieber Beauty”, but it was rejected because it was confused with another brand already registered by her husband, Justin Bieber. This led her to use her middle name to promote her skincare line.
It has registered trademarks in categories such as “wellness products, bath and shower products, beauty creams, personal cleaning products, cosmetics, make-up, fragrances, hair care and skin care”.
When asked about her beauty brand, Bieber said in a podcast with Demi Lovato:
“I feel like for the first time, I know this is where I’m meant to be and this is what I’m meant to do.”
In January, the star posted a sneak peek of her business, along with an Instagram photo that captured her with glowing skin.
